How to receive the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)?

We are in a difficult period following the Covid-19 events, this article is there to help people resident in Canada.

What are the eligibility criteria?

First of all, you must be over 15 years of age and have stopped working because of COVID and NOT HAVE RESIGNED. 3 cases are eligible for this emergency aid:


  • You earned $ 5,000 CAD in the past 12 months (all sources)

  • You earned CAD $ 5,000 in 2019 (all sources)

  • You earned the equivalent of $ 5,000 CAD in a country outside Canada in the past 12 months or in 2019 and currently you are RESIDENT OR CITIZEN in Canada.

  • You earned the equivalent of $ 5,000 CAD in a country outside Canada in the last 4 months preceding March 15 (example for work Holiday Visa).

Example : I am Canadian, I worked in France until January 2020, mid February, I found a job in Canada that I lost because of the Covid in mid-March. So I can cumulate my salaries between Canada and France for the request.

Other special cases if you have not lost your job (always understanding the rule of $ 5,000 earned above):


  • working hours reduced to 0

  • you are sick or quarantined due to COVID-19

  • you have to take care of people or the sick at COVID

  • you have to take care of your children or dependents whose establishments have closed due to COVID

When to apply?


TIMETABLE: EVERY DAY FROM MIDNIGHT TO 3 AM IN THE MORNING AND FROM 6 AM TO MIDNIGHT.


In view of the large number of visitors to the website and the telephone line, you must make your request according to your MONTH OF BIRTH:


  • Mondays : January / February / March

  • Tuesdays : April / May / June

  • Wednesdays : July / August / September

  • Thursdays : October / November / December

  • Fridays / Saturdays / Sundays : Everyone

How to get there?

  • With your ARC account (click here) : If you have already created an account while making your tax declaration, you just need to log in, click on the Covid banner, choose your request period, confirm that you meet the criteria and your means of receiving payment. Additional documents (proof of wages, work stoppages) will potentially be requested later (work dates / earnings per week for each job / place of work / copy of contracts ...).

  • By phone, via an automated line: call 1-800-959-2019, you will need your SIN and postal code.

NB: If you choose the check option, help will be sent to you within 10 days maximum, 3 days by direct deposit.

NB2: THIS REQUEST IS TO BE MADE AGAIN BY 4 WEEKS.

Example: I stopped working on March 15. By connecting I make my request for help from March 16 to April 12. From April 27, I could reconnect to make a request again (you must not work 14 days before renewing a request).


How much and for how long?

The assistance is unique, it is $ 2,000 CAD paid every 4 weeks ($ 500 CAD per week) regardless of the salary you earned. You can receive this benefit for 16 weeks, from March 15, 2020 to October 3, 2020.

Deadline for submitting your ECP application: December 2, 2020

Emergency aid or Employment Insurance?

If the emergency aid is higher than employment insurance (EI) according to the calculation, then you are entitled to apply for a PKU instead. For those wishing to apply for EI it is here (having contributed at least 700 hours in insurable employment).
