After having a chat with many people came in Canada, I noticed a general tendency to be afraid to speak in English. Today, I am going to give you good deals to train yourself and to improve your English while remaining accessible! While you’re in Canada or still in another country, these tips are for you ;)
Remember, your level will only increase if you’re diligent and if you practice every day!
On the Internet
There are many ways to train in English on the Internet, but some are more effective than others.
Duolingo : Both present on computer and mobile application. This free application will allow you to improve your vocabulary level as well as your pronunciation
(speech Recognition). The entire website is free and guaranteed without ads. In return, you come across sentences in the strangest sense sometimes (but grammatically correct) which only Duolingo has the secret. Prepare to be harassed by this little green owl who will be there to remind you to practice everyday.
Babbel : Of course, this solution is not free but personally, it is the one I use the most. We can say that it is the much more advanced version than Duolingo: you can exercise your writing, your understanding and learn ton of vocabulary. You’ll find a very long list of things to do on this website. There are even parts on the cultures of English-speaking countries that will complement the knowledge you may already have. The price is around thirty euros for a 6-month subscription.
Ororo TV : A website listing a multitude of TV shows, documentaries in English to train your ear to listen English.
Mundolingo: Present in Toronto but in other big cities through the world, this group organizes free meetings in a pub with a simple concept. The organizer sticks you the flags of the languages you speak. Once in the pub you can know which languages people speak: get out of your comfort zone directly by avoiding your own flags (if it’s a common language) and go train to meet new people from Canada or even others country!
In the streets
A method to always continue to progress in English, when you’re walking on the street, take time to look around you and read all the signs / ads you see. By forcing yourself to read them, you’ll get used to reading the language, and if a word you don't understand comes up often, you’ll easily learn it as soon as you get its translation.
Indeed, this will get your brain used to better understanding the construction of sentences, start with books that are adapted to your level of English.
Watching english series
Maybe you already did it with subtitles in your own language. Now if that is easy, it is time for you to put them in English subtitles, this will allow you to better understand the pronunciation of words.
If your level of English is low start with English cartoons with English subtitles (or without subtitles if that is too easy!).
To progress in English at all levels prefer to watch TV shows such as FRIENDS, How I Met Your Mother ... these shows use a lot of vocabulary and word games, this will add challenge to your learning!
